Of all the memories we all hold on to, the ones we never learn to let go of are those of our family.
When it comes to family photography, there simply isn’t a ‘one size fits all.’ Each family is different in their own way, a trait that should be applied to their own portraits.
Parents and grandparents all want that family shot that they can treasure. Reminding them of particular moments and specials events. They are priceless, personal and more valuable to us than anything else we own or keep in our houses.
Share the family love
Behind all family portraits ideas there is one universal theme, capture the love between family members. Parents walking on the beach with their children and playing in the water. A mother kissing her son, a dad holding his newborn child. Their is no greater love than a parents love for their child.
Include the family pet
Many people consider their pets to be part of the family, and pet portraits are a growing trend, so why not include the furry friends in the family photo? Let the animal roam and interact with the family while you shoot. Just remember that pets are unpredictable and fast (unless you have a snail or a turtle). But luckily, pets will do most things for a snack or treat.
Recreate the past
It can be fun to revisit an old family photo and try to recreate it. It makes for some funny moments when grown children recreate a pose from when they were toddlers. Or play dress up in old fashion clothing from back in the grandparent’s day. These leading to interesting photo moments that everyone will treasure and enjoy.
Let the kids run free
Bring props, toys or even bubbles!! We understand it’s very trying and frustrating to try and get that perfect image. Children are so unpredictable, doing what they do best, pulling faces, playing up, not sitting still! So don’t set your expectations too high, if they don’t want to smile, don’t force it.
If you have any shy or playful children as part of your family’s portrait then just let them be them. Let them have fun with a few toys or games, to begin with before you start to try and pose them for a photo. Sometimes those candid moments when they are being them, are moments to capture.
You can also play with them, entertain them, make noises, sing songs, have fun and then be ready to capture that moment when it happens.
Also you can have the kids dress as up as a favourite character, get the family to recreate a scene from a favourite movie, or have some family members swap clothes to hilarious effect.
Focus on experiences
In live, their are few things more precious than spending quality time with your family. Families have discussed this again during the lockdowns. Don’t let precious moments in time past you by. Hold on to these memories forever by making them the center of your family portrait photoshoot.
Each family is different in their own way, and this differences should be showcased in your family portraits, including your four-legged family members.
Pets are family too, as any pet owner will tell you. On top of that, their cuteness should simply not be limited to pet photography.
Outdoor Family Photo
Taking it outdoors is always a good option for family photos. The great outdoors can offer beautiful natural lighting and gorgeous background landscapes.
As with most types of outdoor photography, shooting during the sunset can make your photos more powerful by bathing the family in warm light, creating long shadows, and making everything seem to glow.
While it may be tempting to choose an outdoor family photo location based on the landscape alone, you should, ideally, choose a spot that has some meaning to the family because it will make the photo more meaningful. For example, go to a favourite park or even the family’s own backyard. As an added bonus, it will help keep young children and pets comfortable by shooting in a location they’re familiar with.
Another idea is getting the family suited up in their rain gear and umbrellas and shoot in the rain for some cute family pictures. Having everyone in their raincoats with a wet, reflective look to everything, can make for a striking photo. Let the kids splash and play in a puddle for some added fun!
Candid photography scenes
Many people believe that candid portraits are the best way to truly capture the pure bond between family members. The nature aspect of candid photography, can captures the true nature of a family bond and love.
Sometimes if a toddler isn’t cooperating, a pet is acting up, or something else unexpected happens in the middle of the photoshoot, just don’t stop shooting! You may capture a genuinely funny moment as everyone reacts to what’s happening.
Find new ideas
Every family is different, and so are their family portrait ideas. Don’t be afraid to try new ideas and locations in your photoshoots. Explore different setups until you find the one that better represents your family’s uniqueness.
